Microneedling Q&A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling revitalizes your skin, making you look and feel younger by increasing collagen production.

Collagen is a protein that gives skin and other tissues their elastic qualities. As you age, collagen production slows down, particularly after menopause. Microneedling stimulates additional collagen production, which has a rejuvenating effect on your skin.

Microneedling tightens your skin, improves its texture and tone, and can help reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and large pores.

How does microneedling work?

A microneedling device has multiple tiny needles on it. The needles make tiny puncture wounds as the device passes over your skin. These minute wounds stimulate your body’s natural repair processes, which include increasing collagen production. The extra collagen makes new skin that’s firmer and smoother.

The Soine Dermatology & Aesthetics team also uses PRP when performing microneedling procedures. PRP is a healing substance made from your blood. The platelets contain growth factors that assist with cell generation and tissue repair.

Your provider applies a layer of PRP to your skin as part of your microneedling treatment. The PRP enters your tissues through the tiny wounds made by the microneedling device, encouraging healing to optimize your results.

What happens when I have microneedling treatment?

The first stage of microneedling treatment at Soine Dermatology & Aesthetics is harvesting blood to make the PRP. Your provider draws some blood from an arm vein and puts it in a centrifuge device that spins at very high speeds. This separates the plasma (liquid) and platelets from your red and white blood cells.

After cleansing and preparing your face, your provider passes the microneedling device over your skin. Then they apply the prepared PRP. Although the procedure causes minimal pain, you can have numbing cream applied to your skin beforehand to ensure complete comfort. The cream must go on your skin about 45 minutes before microneedling begins.

After treatment, you might feel a little tenderness, and your skin may be red and hot, but these effects pass in a few days. You should feel some benefit immediately, but full results take several weeks to develop. You can continue with your routine as usual, but ensure you follow the Soine Dermatology & Aesthetics team’s advice on caring for your skin.
