What causes hair loss?

Most hair loss is hereditary — you inherit genes from your parents that make your hair follicles (where the roots are) shrink and eventually stop producing hair. This problem (androgenic alopecia) is commonly known as male or female pattern baldness. It can begin in your teens but usually develops later in life.

For women, the first sign of female pattern baldness is general hair thinning or a widening part. With male pattern baldness, you’re more likely to have a receding hairline or develop a bald spot on top of your head.

Other potential causes of hair loss include:

• Alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder
• Chemotherapy for cancer
• Radiation treatment to your head or neck
• Severe stress
• Excessive use of coloring, perming, or relaxing hair treatments
• Traction alopecia from braiding hair too tightly
• Medication side effects
• Scalp infections
• Lack of biotin, iron, protein, or zinc in the diet

Hormonal disorders like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hypothyroidism can also cause hair loss. Your hair will likely thin and recede from your forehead as you age.

Is hair loss treatable?

In many cases, hair loss is treatable and often reversible. The main issue is whether the follicles in your skin are healthy. If they’re damaged, new hair can’t grow.

Some hair loss conditions reverse when you receive treatment for the underlying cause. For example, taking daily levothyroxine pills to rebalance your thyroid hormones reverses hair loss caused by hypothyroidism. Antifungal medications can treat infections like ringworm, after which your hair should grow back.

If hair loss is due to a nutrient deficiency, changing your diet should help. If the cause is hair treatments, stopping them will help, but follicle damage is more likely. If you have chemotherapy or radiation treatments, your hair should grow back when it ends.
