You may have heard the old adage “You can tell a woman’s age by her neck”- and this statement could not be more accurate. Our tendency as women is to focus on the areas of our body that seem most important (the face) while ignoring others (the neck). At Soine Dermatology, we receive daily inquiries on how to improve the appearance of the aging neck. Unfortunately, the skin on the neck is much thinner and more sensitive than the face and tends to receive fewer applications of protective sunscreen. It also has fewer pores per square inch, which means it is susceptible to greater damage and accelerated aging. Since the focus of our sunscreen and other anti-aging products are used on the face to prevent wrinkles and damage, the neck becomes unintentionally ignored.
Options to improve your neck are limited, but can range from surgery to non-invasive procedures, to products as well. Ultherapy is the only FDA-approved, non-invasive treatment for lifting the skin on the face, neck, and chest. Using ultrasound technology, Ultherapy treats the deep layers of skin tissue without disturbing the surface of the skin. By heating the targeted tissue underneath the surface of the skin, Ultherapy stimulates the body’s natural production of collagen. Do not confuse Ultherapy with radio frequency devices that are currently very popular. Radio frequency cannot get down as deep into the skin and requires multiple treatments and is not permanent.
Anyone can benefit from Ultherapy because we are using your body’s own collagen and healing ability. It is most often used to improve the neck but it can also be used for the brow, mouth, cheeks and décolletage.
Ultherapy delivers focused ultrasound energy to stimulate the growth of new collagen deep within the skin. The production of new collagen occurs over time, so results can become more apparent over three, six and nine months. The benefit of the gradual healing is that no one will be able to tell that you underwent a procedure.
There may be mild redness for an hour following the treatment, and a small percentage of patients may have slight swelling, tingling or tenderness to the touch, but these are mild and temporary in nature. Approximately half of all patients have some mild bruising and sometimes welting can be observed on the skin and should resolve within a few hours.
The best thing about the Ultherapy skin tightening procedure is that it uses your own body’s ability to heal so your results are completely natural. Nothing is added or injected. While Ultherapy does not duplicate the results of a facelift, it’s an exciting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery – and for patients who wish to extend the effects of cosmetic surgery.
